Building the last Main Line Railway
Great Central Bridge and Viaduct: gcrcs66
The men above are riviting the steel sheeting to the base of
the Great Central Railway bridge over the LNWR at Rugby. The small brazier
would be used to heat up the rivets prior to their being hammered into through
the steel sheeting and into pre-cut holes in the steel girders. The crane at
the far end and other photigraphs suggest that this work was carried prior to
the rest of the railway being built adjacent to this structure. C1896
