LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Staverton Road: gcrsr33
|
LNER 2-6-2 Class V2 No 4830 is seen heading a down passenger
train past the down refuge siding near Staverton Road. Built as LNER No 2969 by
Darlington works in December 1931, No 4830 was renumbered in December 1946 by
the LNER as No 4830 and again by British Railways in January 1950 as No 60859
which it carried until it was withdrawn from service in in September 1965 from
52A Gateshead shed. See image 'gcrsr34' for another
view of the locomotive two years later. Steve Simpson wrote to challenge the
alleged date of the photograph (stated to be circa 1946) writing, 'if this
view was taken in 1946 what is the train? It appears to be LNER stock but if it
is why the livery which looks like BR's cream and carriage lake scheme which
not introduced until after nationalisation'. John Hyde writes, 'The
photo was almost certainly taken before nationalisation which took place on 1st
January 1948. The rake of coaches in question is composed of Gresley tourist
stock in green and cream livery. If sharp enough, the negative may under
magnification, reveal an articulated pair of coaches in there somewhere.
Perhaps someone can throw light on the trains presence on the Great
Central'. Steve Banks wrote several years later, 'A fine picture of a
Gresley Tourist train set composed of two identical halves each
with its own buffet car, thus: Brake Third Open, Third Open-Third Open, RB,
Third Open-Third Open and Third Open-Third Open, RB, Third Open-Third Open,
Brake Third Open. Note extensive use of the 3rd open twin.'
