JH Rainbow Coal & Wood Merchant Leamington PO Wagon No 5

John H Rainbow

He was born in Brailes, Warwickshire, the son of a shepherd in 1862, and by 1901 had moved to 16 Forefield Place Leamington and commenced trading as a coal and wood merchant.

Although the business was not a substantial one, the wagon illustrated is the only known example that he owned, he traded until at least 1946, which makes the number 5t on the wagon a curiosity but it is not unique. It was built in 1914 by the Gloucester RC&WCo. and is painted red with white letters shaded black. It measures 15'6" x 7'0" x 3'1" with five planks side doors and raised ends.
