Avon Bridge Power Station: misc_abps155c

The third of four photographs showing the aftermath of a shunting incident at the Power Station's rotary coal tippler in the late 1940s

The third of four photographs showing the aftermath of a shunting incident at the Power Station's rotary coal tippler in the late 1940s. The photograph shows two seven plank ex-Private Owner open wagons which have jack-knifed vertically after being forced against the buffer stop at the end of the rotary coal tipper siding. The wagon on the left has both side doors and also an end door (at the top). This arrangement was typical of the Railway Clearing House (RCH) specifications. These specifications introduced standardised parts and dimensions, which meant that it was easier to interchange parts when repairs were required. The wagon has a wooden underframe and is fitted with either side manual brake levers. The other open wagon has no side doors, but does have an opening end door. Previous repairs to the side planking make it difficult to decipher the name of the original private owners.
