A Great Western Railway Memo responding to an enquiry about the connections to the exchange sidings for the BSA Waverley Road Works

A Great Western Railway Memo responding to an enquiry about the connections to the exchange sidings for the BSA Waverley Road Works, which was being built at the time to assist the war effort. On 16th November 1917 the Directors of the Great Western Railway were requested to authorise £7,822 for the installation of siding accommodation for the Birmingham Small Arms Factory at Small Heath. This was additional work undertaken for the Government, the cost of which was to be borne by the Munitions Department.

The Signalling Amendment Sheet (S2777/1) for Small Heath South Signal Box confirms that drawings for ‘PRIVATE SIDING FOR B.S.A. LTD, ADDITIONAL CONNECTIONS TO UP & DOWN MAIN LINES‘ were dated December 1917, but that the occupation for the railway construction work took place in March 1919, some fourteen months after this memo is dated. A hand written comment on the Signalling Amendment Sheet notes that this private siding did not became operational until November 1919 per Railway Clearing House.
