British Railways built 0-6-0T No 1509 is seen whilst in steam standing behind classmate No 1501 alongside the main shaft. Part of a lot of three locomotives bought by the NCB for Coventry, No 1509 and No 1502 were also later purchased as a job lot by the Severn Valley Railway Preservation Society. However their purpose was to provide spares for No 1501 and their remains were cut-up and scrapped in October 1970 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. The shaft was 720 yards deep and by 1939 Coventry Colliery was producing one million tons of coal a year. From the mid 1960s there was also a Homefire Plant in Keresley.
