The Great Western Railway introduced additional smoking
accommodation in its trains during 1930 with the object of meeting the
requirements of the travelling public. The attached circular, given as an
example, detailed the proportion of smoking accommodation to be provided on
each service within Birmingham's local services (reflecting our Warwickshire
theme). It will be noted that while all trains had a minimum of 50% smoking
accommodation, this proportion was increased on local trains to 75%. See also
'misc_equip312' for an article detailing the
history of smoking on trains and the labelling applied to compartment
windows.
