The internal siding adjacent to the Tractor Erecting Shop in the North Works in the early 1920s

A photograph from the www.austinmemories.com website showing the internal siding adjacent to the Tractor Erecting Shop in the North Works in the early 1920s. After the First World War, Austin Motors manufactured ‘model R’ tractors powered by their proven 20 hp engine and in 1921 tractor components were also shipped to the ‘Societe Anonyme Austin’ Works at Liancourt in France for assembly. Sales of tractors were initially helped by high UK and French import tariffs, but when the UK tariffs were removed, the cheaper American made Fordson tractor dominated the domestic market and production of tractors at Longbridge ceased. Production continued in France with some tractors even being imported into the UK. This photograph shows Austin tractors for the UK domestic market being directly loaded, by the work's electrically powered overhead crane, onto an assortment of open wagons The wagons are headed by what is thought to be 0-6-0ST ‘Emily’.
