A late 1950s view of Newdigate Wharf looking back towards the colliery and the ramp leading up to the exchange sidings. On the left are the narrow boats, 'motors' and 'butties') waiting to be loaded. It is often forgotten that coal and other bulk traffic were still being moved by narrow boats in the 1950s and into the 1960s and was as much a casualty of the competition by road transport as the railways were.
