A debate between William Dean and Wolverhampton's engineer's office followed the decision to install a water supply. Dean suggested the tank should be located on the ramp at the northern end of the platform whereas Mr Robottom of Wolverhampton suggested it was erected at the opposite end of the platform by the toe of of the engine release points. In the end it was erected alongside the run-round loop between the yard entry and head shunt points, the water supply being provided by a 2000 gallon tank that was available ex-stock at Swindon, as can be seen in image 'gwrss536a'. It required an 18 inch high brick base to raise the tank to a height sufficient for the swinging jib crane to clear the saddle tanks used on the line.
