Handsworth Wood Station: lnwr_hw3617
LNWR No 683 is seen passing through the station with an up
goods train most likely destined for Wolverhampton. The build date of the
locomotive, the short grass and cleanliness would indicate that the photograph
dates from just before the turn of the century. Of interest are the ranch
railings which as seen above are constructed from timber and fitted to all
parts of the station. Compare this to image 'lnwr_hw1516' which shows arrowhead railings
installed adjacent to to the steps on both platforms and to the sections of
both platforms nearest to the tunnel. The 0-6-0 'Cauliflower' locomotive, (the
nickname deriving from the LNWR crest seen on the middle splasher as it was
thought to resemble the vegetable when viewed from a distance) was built by
Crewe works in March 1897 and was renumbered by the LMS as No 8444 in February
1927 which it carried until July 1929 when it was withdrawn from service to be
scrapped.
