Close up of image 'lnwr_oldmil1453' showing the fireman
looking out of the cab of the ex-LNWR 7F 0-8-0 'G2' No 9436 and haze of hot air
above the chimney. This was the sign of the perfect fire, no smoke or
half-burnt embers, and despite hauling a long mixed goods train with at least
100 tons of coal in the first 12 wagons. The sight of a camera obviously still
held a fascination with the enginemen as both driver and fireman are looking
towards the camera. Built at Crewe in March 1922 No 9436 was, like many of its
classmates, still active into the final decade of steam on BR metals being
withdrawn from Springs Branch (Wigan) shed in June 1959 and being scrapped at
Crewe Works in the same month.
