fast line. The use of white backboards to signals in order to help enginemen to
see whether the signal was at danger or in the off position was very common.
When two signals were sighted one above the other this was because one was the
distance signal informing the driver whether the next signal was clear or at
danger whilst the other was to allow the engine to pass in to the next section
or block.
