LNWR 4-6-0 Claughton Class No 856 'E Tootal Broadhurst'
approaches with a Euston to Manchester express. Built by Crewe works in
September 1914 No 856 was renumbered as No 5916 by the LMS in June 1927 and
then notionally rebuilt as a member of the Patriot Class, No 5525, in March
1932 although little if anything was reused. This was a paper exercise used by
accountants to charge the full cost of building against revenue instead of
against capital which would mean the LMS having to set aside additional funding
for a period of years.
