Great Northern Railway 4-4-2 No 1449 is seen passing Tamworth's Pump House at the head of the 10 am Euston to Glasgow express service in the summer of 1909. The LNWR, CR, GNR and the LB&SCR undertook trials on comparative locomotive performance with LNWR 4-6-0 Experiment class No 510 'Albatross' competing against the GNR's Atlantic locomotive No 1449. The results were in the main not favorable to the LNWR with the GNR recording about six percent less coal used.
