LMS 4P 4-4-0 'Compound' No 1173 stands outside the shed after being serviced on 24th September 1932. Built by the Vulcan Foundry in November 1925 No 1173 remained in service for thirty-four years being withdrawn from Derby shed in February 1959 although it was not scrapped by A Loom of Spondon until August 1961. The LMS Compound was based on the Midland Railway's 1000 class of which some 45 were built. They were almost identical with the most obvious difference being the driving wheel diameter which was reduced from 7' 0" on the Midland locomotive to 6' 9" on the LMS version. The LMS initially continued using the Midland numbering sequence, by starting at No 1045 and ending at No 1199, but as more of the class were built the LMS started a new series of numbers commencing with No 900 and ending with No 939. After nationalisation in 1948, British Railways added 40000 to their numbers so they became No 40900 to No 40939 and No 41045 to No 41199. None of the class has survived to preservation, though the first of the founder member of the Midland Railways 1000 class design has been preserved.
