LMS Route: Rugby to Leamington Spa (Avenue)

Birdingbury Station: lnwrbird3973

British Railways built 2MT 2-6-2T No 41227, in 'Push-Pull' mode, is propelling a two-coach train to Rugby

British Railways built 2MT 2-6-2T No 41227, in 'Push-Pull' mode, is propelling a two-coach train to Rugby as it arrives at Birdingbury station on 2nd May 1959. The 'white' area on the track on the left is evidence of rail joint pumping which suggests soft ground beneath the sleepers and poor maintenance. The oil lamp on the right was used to the end, common with most stations located in rural areas. The state of the station gives clear indication that the station is about to close in six weeks time. Compare this photograph to that seen in image 'lnwrbird3967' and one has a perfect illustration of how the railways fell in decline post Second World War.
