Birmingham New Street Station
LNWR Locomotives: lnwrbns_pg355
View of LNWR 0-6-0ST No 2039 as it is seen standing at the
head of empty coaching stock whilst on the up middle road on pilot duties at
New Street station. In 1904-5 some forty-five of FW Webb's '17 inch Coal
Engines' were converted from tender locomotives to tank engines for shunting
purposes. Because of the box-like tank on top of the boiler they were known as
'square saddle tanks' although on the Great Western Railway this design would
be described as a Pannier Tank.
