This was John Ramsbottom's last design and only twenty were built before his successor FW Webb took over as Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME). The class, first built in 1870, was in essence a saddle Tank version of his ‘DX’ 0-6-0 goods engine although whilst it had the same cylinders and wheelbase it employed slightly smaller wheels and boiler. The smaller wheels being beneficial in providing greater tractive power an important consideration for a class designed to be used for shunting.
