View from the Midland Railway's Parcels Offices looking West
towards New Street No 2 Signal Box with Platform 6 on the left. After the New
Street extension was given over to the Midland Railway for their dedicated use
in 1889, Platform 6 was generally used for most of the company's most important
trains. The island platform on which No 2 signal box is sited was used mainly
by local trains with down trains using the left hand face and up trains using
the opposite side. The practice adopted by the LNWR of numbering the platform
and not the face of the platform which was instigated with the original portion
of New Street still continued with the extension. This can be seen above
whereby the island platform has the number 5 displayed on both sides of the
platform just beyond the ramp to the subway.
