Ex-LNWR 4-6-2T 4P No 6978 is seen standing at the head of a local passenger service facing Birmingham but on the up line adjacent to the parcels depot and sidings on 23rd April 1935. When a locomotive is working a train against the normal flow of traffic - not a normal occurrence unless the line is bidirectional - this type of working is described as working 'wrong road'. The Bryant & Mays Matches sign on the fascia on the parcels bay is notable, both as indication of the readiness of the railway to exploit all revenue generating opportunities, as well as being a rare view. This image and image 'lnwrcov286' are the only photographs seen by the author showing this advert. Built at Crewe works in March 1911 No 6978 remained in service for a further two years after this photograph was taken being withdrawn in March 1937 to be scrapped shortly afterwards at Crewe works.
