View of ex-LMS locomotives stored in the 'Promenade' sidings including 4-4-0 No 40936 and 4-4-0 No 44506 in 1961. The rapid dieselisation following the modernisation plan of the mid-1950s together with the closure or reduction in services on many branch lines meant that steam engines were being withdrawn at such a rate that scrap merchants could not cope with the volume. Therefore the scene seen above was replicated at many sheds throughout the country. The Compound No 40936 was built as LMS NO 936 by Derby works in September 1932 and remained in service until it was withdrawn from 21E Monument Lane shed in January 1961. The 4F No 44506 was built as LMS No 4506 by the North British Locomotive Company in December 1927 and was to remain in service until it too was withdrawn from 21E Monument Lane shed in March 1960.
