Winson Green station's LMS Hawkseye station name board painted in British Railways colours thought to be white on a maroon background circa c1957. The LMS introduced the Hawkseye station name board, in railway parlance the 'running in board', in 1938. According to VR Anderson and HN Twells in part one of their two part series 'LMS Lineside - An LMS Journal Handbook' they were supplied by a local company GC Hawkes of Birmingham having been developed following years of research by the LMS into style and legibility of station name signs. They were originally painted yellow with black letters and had three quarters of a million minute glass beads embedded in the face to help the signs stand out at night.
