Midland Railway 1P 0-4-4T No 1327, bunker filled with coal
for its next trip, stands in a siding at Bournville on Sunday 9th April 1922.
Fireman's tools are stowed on top of the side tank. There is a man on the
footplate, but he may be a friend of the photographer rather than a railwayman.
The young trees in the background probably mark the boundary of the adjoining
Cotteridge Park. The engine was one of the two hundred and five Johnson 0-4-4Ts
built between 1875 and 1900. Built in June 1885 at the Midland Railway Derby
Works, this one entered service as No 1734. It became No 1327 in the 1907
renumbering scheme. It would have been painted red, the railway's standard
colour for passenger engines, when photographed. This would have been changed
to lined black by the time it was withdrawn in April 1940.
