Close up of image 'mrcgy924' showing one of the Midland
Railways' four-wheel non-ventilated covered vans being unloaded. Also called a
'Box' van these vehicles were used to transport goods that required a dry
atmosphere or a secure environment. The ventilated vans were often built to a
similar design but with ventilators fitted at either end of the van. The van
being unloaded is, together with the one on the right, smaller than the others
and would probably have had a wooden chassis. The difference in size might be
because its a much older design and being allocated to a line with a more
severe loading gauge. The dray is fitted with a tarpaulin cover that was
designed to slide back in order to allow a sack truck to be used.
