Close up of image 'mrchrd866' showing Church Road tunnel and
the lower quadrant signal suspended from beneath the passenger footbridge. The
arm is pointing to the right and is fixed to the other side of the post
indicating that its protecting the up line (on the right). The reason its been
placed so far over to almost above the down line is to aid its sighting by the
driver of locomotives coming through the tunnel. To the left of the steps on
the down platform an unusual telegraph pole configuration can be seen. The arms
carrying the wires are cantilevered to the left instead of being centrally
positioned. This is because there is little ground between the railway and the
canal to accommodate the post in a central position.
