Midland Railway 4-4-0 2P No 450 is in fine fettle at it works the Pines Express near Northfield on 6th August 1921. The smoke from the chimney is barely visible showing that the coal is being burnt in a firebox where the heat will be incandescent white. Another member of the MR's 483 class, No 450 was built by Derby works in April 1894 and had a long working life being retired from service from Patricroft shed in March 1957 to be scrapped at Derby works the same month. At the time of the photograph No 450 allocated to Saltley shed.
