LMS 4MT 2-6-4T No 2685, designed by Fairburn, is seen standing in steam alongside Saltley's water tower adjacent to No 2 roundhouse circa 1950. Built at Derby works in July 1945, No 2685's expected working life was curtailed due to British Railway's modernisation programme implemented in the mid 1950s. Renumbered by British Railways as No 42685 it was withdrawn in October 1962 from Rowsley shed and scrapped in January 1963 at Derby works.
