LMS Route: Stratford Midland Junction - The Shakespeare Route

Stratford on Avon Station: smjsa108

Looking East towards Fenny Compton with the second signal box on the left and the water tower for the shed on the right

Looking East towards Fenny Compton with the second signal box on the left and the water tower for the shed on the right on 24th May 1959. The station although still complete has been long closed as indicated by the state of its paint work and the broken window on the down platform passenger waiting room. In this view the timber crossing for passengers from the end of the two platforms, as previously seen in image 'smjsa43a', has been lifted yet in later views it has been reinstalled, as seen in image 'smjsa113'. The new clean ballast seen on both the up and down lines are part of the advanced engineering works that were carried out when the junction to the former GWR line at Stratford Race Course was installed. The Signal Box clearly has recently been repainted although it would be replaced within a couple of years by a lever frame.
