An article in December 1930 edition of the Great Western Railway magazine giving a brief history of the changes to smoking regulations to that date

The attached article appeared in the Great Western Railway magazine Vol XLII No12 (December 1930). It gave a brief history of the changes to smoking regulations to that date. Earlier in that year the Great Western Railway had increased the proportion of smoking accommodation on its trains (see 'misc_equip313'). Smoking accommodation had been previously marked on the compartment window with either a transfer label or by etching the glass as per the upper photograph taken in the 1930s, but non-smoking accommodation had not been marked. In the November 1930 Magazine a short paragraph accompanied a sketch of the recently introduced ‘No Smoking’ label and stated that; For the comfort of those passengers who object to smoking it has been arranged to label non-smoking compartments ‘No Smoking ‘ this label being triangular in form bearing red letters within a red border.
