Deeley 0-4-0T No 1528, one of a class of ten, was
photographed in the roundhouse at Bournville by WL Good, on Saturday 14th
August 1948. The presence of this small shunting engine there is something of a
mystery. The 18D shed plate shows it was allocated to Staveley in Derbyshire,
which had many such engines on its books. I wonder if it was en route to or
from Gloucester. The depot there might have borrowed it to cover the duties of
one of the two engines of this class on its own allocation, while theirs was in
the works at Derby. Dramatic evidence of this type of small shunting engine
turning up in other unexpected places is on 'lnwr_tam3130', which shows one involved in an
accident at Tamworth.
