GWR Route: Bearley to Alcester
Alcester Station - GWR Views: gwr-mra137
Post World War One view of the junction with the Midland
Railway's Evesham to Birmingham line showing the lifted track on 21st September
1920. The tall MR signal post (arms removed) was this height so that drivers
could see the signal over the bridge and protected the junction. This signal
was replaced by a shorter post signal located on the opposite side of the
cutting (see 'gwr-mra472' and 'gwr-mra473') when the line was reopened in 1923.
During World War One, or the Great War as it was called up to the
outbreak of the Second World War, lines with low usage often had their rail
lifted as an economy measure and diverted for use at the 'Front' in France
where hundreds of miles of track (and engines and rolling stock) were employed
to move the munitions and men required. The signals controlling the MR line can
be seen behind the hedgerow in the distance whilst the signal box adjacent to
the goods yard is on the extreme left.
