Colour No.3 (dark stone) was used for any raised framing, structural iron and woodwork and low level planking on timber structures or doors, while Colour No.2 (light stone) was used in any panels and at high level on timber walls or doors (Colour No.1 was the undercoat). These stone shades were produced by adding varying amounts of iron oxide to a white lead base.
