GWR Route: Hatton to Bearley and Alcester Branch
Bearley Station: gwrb782
|
The new works associated with the doubling of the track were
substantially complete in this photograph taken in May 1939. Viewed from the
Bearley Junction end of the station, the extended platform and new footbridge
can be seen. On the right is the newly constructed down platform waiting room.
This had a larger canopy with the typical GWR saw-tooth awning (compare with
the old waiting room in gwrb770a). It also
incorporated a small staff room at the west end of building. The building on
the left was a small rectangular brick structure with a low pitched gable roof
and projecting platform canopy. Internally 3 rooms booking office, waiting room
& ladies waiting room. A small extension on the East end contained porter
room cum store together with gents which were at the rear. The partially glazed
platform canopy was supported on ornamental brackets/iron work with the letters
SR (Stratford Railway) incorporated. William Clarke's preferences in his design
for T & G fretwork are seen in canopy. The 1938 works saw the station
lengthened at Hatton end of station, addition of footbridge and new passenger
waiting rooms on down platform. The new down platform canopy had typical GWR
saw-tooth awnings. Down platform building incorporated small staff room at the
west end of building.
