GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh1138
Looking from Colmore Row down Snow Hill towards Great
Charles Street in the distance with the station on the left hand side in 1915.
The gradient of Snow Hill allowed the Great Western to provide extensive parcel
facilities which was a lucrative stream of business revenue. Prior to the
1950s, the railways could still compete against road transport for goods and
parcel traffic over long distances. Post-war, the development of the national
road network and the sale of the vast number of ex-army lorries allowed a
number of private companies to be established that could compete for
traffic.
