An engraving of the splendidly ornate rebuilt Great Western
Hotel erected over the railway cutting as part of the rebuilding of the station
in 1871. The hotel was located in front of the station facing Colmore Row and
originally was opened in 1863. Its location above the tunnel with the noise and
vibration was an issue with guests and consequently the hotel did not prove
popular and from the early part of the 20th century the company used much of
the building as its own offices.
