The Birmingham, Wolverhampton & Dudley Railway opened in 1854 became the Great Western's dual gauge line from Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Station. with the hotel added in 1863. It was originally called Livery Street Station and was a temporary structure amounting to no more than a simple large wooden shed. It was renamed Snow Hill in 1858, and with the building of a more permanent structure in 1871 the Great Western could at last start to compete with the LNWR's service to London. By 1859 it was possible to travel from Snow Hill to London in just under three hours.
