View of the packed meal service located on Platform 7 which
was the alternative to dining in the train's restaurant car in the early 1960s.
The inscription on the carton read 'A Packed Meal Made at the Principal
Railway Refreshment Rooms. Behind is one of the train 'fingerboards', which
advised passengers as to which platform the service would depart, particularly
useful in Snow Hill's case as the main through platforms had different platform
numbers for each end of the station. The 'fingerboard' was changed for each
service with the one on display showing the next service to call at platform 7
was the express to Paddington calling at Leamington and Banbury. In the rack at
the foot of the column are many others including one for Stratford upon Avon,
Gloucester and Cheltenham and another for Henley in Arden. This was a useful
feature as the main through platforms had different platform numbers for each
end of the station. The train driver standing behind the fingerboards is
thought to be Bill Saywell of Leamington Spa shed.
