View of the re-introduced refreshment trolley service
provided to passengers and to coincide with the British Industrial Fair at
Castle Bromwich in May 1949. The trolley service had been suspended ten years
earlier at the outbreak of the Second World War. The British Industrial Fair
had become a major event since the large complex of buildings were built in
1920 situated between Castle Bromwich Aerodrome and the Midland Railway's
Birmingham to Water Orton railway line. For two weeks every year it was the
most visited attraction in the country and was the major exhibition of the
finest of British industrial goods. The site was sold in 1960, along with that
of the airfield, with the site being cleared for the construction of the Castle
Vale housing estate. The BIF was later replaced by the National Exhibition
Centre.
