An internal view of Snow Hill North Signal Box in 1932
showing a 'Bobby' at work 'pulling off' one of the many 224 electrically
operated levers. At the beginning of railways train movements were controlled
by railway policeman at a period in time that Robert Peel was founding the
Metropolitan Police. As Peel's constables were known as Peelers or
Bobbies the latter nickname was also applied to the railway police
controlling trains and continued to be used in many areas of the country until
the end of steam.
