British Railways 2-10-0 Standard Class 9F No 92215 is seen
at the head of an up Class E express freight service as it passes through the
up through road on 29th March 1961. The Class 9Fs also worked passenger trains
with great success, indicating the versatility of the design, sometime
considered to represent the ultimate in British steam development. The total
number built was 251 with production being shared between Swindon (53) and
Crewe Works (198). The last of the class, No 92220 'Evening Star' was the only
member of the class to be named (by British Railways although some have been
named after preservation) reflecting its role as last steam locomotive to be
built by British Railways in 1960. Withdrawals began in 1964, with the final
locomotives being retired from service in 1968 with the end of steam. Several
examples have survived into the preservation era in varying states of repair,
including No 92220 'Evening Star'.
