The article from the Great Western Railway Magazine dated
October 1911 identified the difficulties in positioning the main longitudinal
girders at the Great Charles Street end of the site. These girders were each
brought to site by rail in one piece from the steel contractors works in
Darlaston and after being partially off-loaded, had one end positioned on a
timber trestle, which was then moved along a temporary four rail track to the
required position. The upper layout and diagrams shows how this process was
intended to work. The lower diagram shows detail of the construction between
each of the main girders to support the floor beneath the platforms and the
ballasted permanent way.
