A picture from ground level showing the cross girders being fitted with steel supports for the third girder. This third girder would support the brindle brick jack arching. After application of a layer of protective asphalt to the topside of the brickwork arch a flat horizontal surface was formed by filling in the voids with solid concrete. A steel plate decking was secured to the top of the third girder, resting on this flat concrete surface. The floor thus constructed was strong enough to support the construction of normal trackwork arrangements with ballast and wooden sleepers and the weight of locomotives and rolling stock. This construction resulted in an equally distributed strength, which allowed flexibility for future modifications to the track layouts without any structural changes being necessary. On the left are the cross girders which will support the platform. These cross girders have been positioned at a higher level and will not require the brick jack arching as the loading requirements of the platform area was significantly lower than that of the trackwork area.
