An artist's impression of how the Great Western Railway's new hotel in Colmore Row would look after completion. The re-development of the hotel never happened due to the outbreak of the Second World War. After the war the GWR together with the other 'big three' were in no position to finance such expansion. They were in a poor state because during the war very little preventive maintenance had been taking place at a time when the railways were having to do much more.
