The special stage in position at the North end of the station during the erection of the overall roof, with the initial sections of the transverse bay roof under construction. The special stage spanned the 103 feet across the four tracks between the columns on the main platforms. At either end the special stage was supported on three wheeled trestles that could be moved along the platforms on temporary rails as the work progressed. On the Up platform the temporary rails and trestles are located behind a hoarding, which is covered in advertising. The special stage had multiple purposes, and as well as protecting the public and traffic below from items that might accidentally fall, it also supported the roof girders and trusses, while they were being riveted in place and a seven ton steam operated travelling crane that was used to lift the roofing components on to the special stage.
