The steel girders which supported the new main booking hall
floor have been installed above the track behind the Great Western Hotel. At
this point the railway tracks converge to a single pair, which descended
through Snow Hill tunnel underneath the hotel. At this time the hotel was being
used as offices for Great Western Railway staff. On the right is the second
Birmingham South Signal Box, which was installed in 1911 as a temporary
measure, being moved in 1913 to Ely Paper Mills Crossing in South Wales
following its replacement with the Siemens power box. This temporary Signal Box
was a standard GW28a type design of wooden construction, twenty-five foot long
by ten feet wide, with plain gable ends and no roof finals. Internally it had a
conventional three bar vertical tappet frame with thirty-six levers at four
inch centres.
