Fifty years after opening on 31st October 1909, Birmingham
North Signal Box had just one year left in service when this photograph was
taken in 1959. This Signal box had cost 923 pounds, 2 shillings and 10 pence
for the building, plus a further £5,000 for the fabrication and
construction of the supporting steel gantry frame. The trunking covering the
multicore cables between the frame and the point switch machines and signals
has been removed in preparation for the rerouting of these power cables to the
replacement signal box. Other cables can be seen hanging temporarily beneath
the frame. In the foreground is a power operated triple disc ground signal.
