Ex-GWR 56xx class 0-6-2T No 5642 stands on the down centre road at Snow Hill station on 14th September 1962. Built by Swindon works to Lot 22 in October 1925 No 6342 remained in service until September 1962 when it was withdrawn from 86J Aberdare shed. It is not known why this locomotive, which has the shed plate 86J on its smokebox door, was in Birmingham literally days prior to it being withdrawn from its home shed. The GWR 56xx class was designed by CB Collett and built between 1924 and 1928 Great Western Railway (GWR), and were introduced into traffic in 1924. Two hundred locomotives were built and remained in service until withdrawn by British Railways between 1962 and 1965. Nine of the class have survived into preservation.
