GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh565
Another pre-World War One view of Snow Hill station's light
and airy concourse with both First and Third Class ticket offices
on the left. Whereas once there were four classes of traveller on the railways
of Britain by the end of the nineteenth century most offered just two classes,
First and Third Class. The Midland Railway pioneered the concept
of offering just two classes in the 1870s and achieved this by abandoning
Second Class travel as Fourth Class had long gone. Reluctantly
the other railway companies were forced to follow suit and offer Second
Class travel accommodation for the cost of Third Class fares.
