GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh565b
Close up of image 'gwrbsh1126' showing the Concourse area
with passengers queuing at the ticket offices whilst porters wait to help
passengers. The reconstruction of Snow Hill commenced in 1906 and took nearly
six years to complete being finished in 1912. The new station building was
intended to compete with New Street, which at the time was very grand building.
In addition to the large booking hall with its splendid arched glass roof it
contained lavish waiting rooms with oak bars. The bottom end of the station had
fish platforms as Birmingham was and still is a major participant in the
seafood industry and goods storage. The station platforms were very long with
four through platforms, which could accommodating two trains at each face, and
4 bay platforms. This led to the GWR adopting the practice of giving each end
of the long platforms a separate number so that platforms 1 & 2, 5 & 6,
7 & 8 and 11 & 12 all shared the same platform.
